    Objectives & Functions

    The Public Works Department of the Government of Maharashtra is responsible for executing a wide range of development initiatives, including:

    • New Constructions: Building new roads, bridges, and government buildings.
    • Maintenance and Repairs: Ensuring the upkeep of existing roads, bridges, and government buildings.
    • Deposit Contribution Projects: Handling deposit contributions for various state departments and local bodies.
    • Disaster-Related Resettlement: Managing resettlement projects following natural calamities such as floods and earthquakes.
    • VIP Infrastructure: Constructing helipads for very Important Person (VIP) visits as needed.
    • Rental Administration: Determining rental rates for private premises requisitioned for government offices.
    • Aviation Infrastructure: Designing, constructing, maintaining, and repairing runways for the Aviation Department.
    • Landscaping and Recreation: Developing parks and gardens near significant public buildings and landscaping grounds to create garden-like environments.
    • Facility Reservations: Reserving government rest houses and circuit houses.
    • Asset Management: Auctioning fruit trees along roadsides.
    • Construction Permits: Granting permissions for the construction of approaches on both sides of roads for private individuals, institutions, factories, petrol pumps, etc.
    • Utility Installations: Approving the installation of irrigation drains, electricity lines, telephone duct cables, and similar utilities along and across roads.
    • Addressing unauthorized developments along roadways while ensuring compliance with regulations and maintaining public accessibility.
    • Safety Certifications: Issuing periodic certificates to cinema houses to verify structural stability and electrical fitting compliance under the Cinema Regulation Act, as well as certifying lifts in private buildings.
    • Land Leasing: Temporarily leasing government land for exhibitions, circuses, and other purposes.
    • Green Initiatives: Planting trees along both sides of roads.
