Introduction
The Public Works Department (PWD) Maharashtra has a rich legacy spanning over 150 years. It is primarily responsible for the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, and government buildings while also serving as a technical advisor to the State Government.
Initially, the department oversaw irrigation, roads, bridges, and public building projects. However, following the formation of the State of Maharashtra in 1960, the department was reorganized into two separate entities: the Irrigation Department and the Building Communication Department. In 1980, housing functions were further delegated to a separate department, solidifying the existing Public Works Department in its current role.
The Public Works Department (PWD) Maharashtra plays a leading role in the state’s infrastructure development, ensuring efficient planning, execution, and maintenance of public assets. The department is responsible for road works including maintenance on National Highways, State Highways and Major District Roads and construction maintenance of Government Buildings. It also undertakes construction on behalf of other department under the Deposit Contribution Works.
